Why a Car Cover Is an Essential Accessory

Classic car owners tend to cherish their vehicles. Many keep them tucked safely away in a garage or storage unit when not in use. However, even if you have a garage, a car cover remains an essential accessory for your classic automobile. Here are several things to consider when you want to purchase a cover for your classic.

The first thing to understand when shopping for a car cover is what type you need for your geographic environment. This is true even if you keep your car in a garage, where moisture, dust and other debris threaten to penetrate its paint job. Choose a car cover made of breathable material so that moisture is permitted to evaporate. Cheaper car covers, especially so-called "universal" car covers, often trap moisture. If you purchase your cover through a dealer that specializes in quality auto accessories, there is a greater likelihood that you are buying a quality product. In fact, some dealers carry covers that are treated with moisture-proof barriers to add extra protection. Cars stored outside require more heavy-duty covers capable of protecting your vehicle from hail, salt and even acid rain. Many quality classic car covers are capable of blocking up to 99 percent of the sun's UV rays, which is crucial if you want to protect leather upholstery and dashboards.

Remember to wash and dry your vehicle thoroughly before placing a cover on it. If you cover it without making sure it is clean and free of grime, you risk dragging debris across the surface and scratching the paint. Finally, do your research and choose the best cover for your car and your climate.
