Following the 60th anniversary of the Corvette and the 100th anniversary of Chevrolet, General Motors spawned its next generation of Corvettes in 2014. As evolutionary as it was revolutionary, the 2014 C7 Corvette included many new features and carried over just two parts from the previous generation. Dubbed the Stingray, it was named in honor of the classic 1963 Sting Ray, then set down by GM as two words rather than one.
The new Gen V small block 6.2 liter V-8 engine, called the LT1, was the most powerful engine put under a standard Corvette's hood yet. Producing 450 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque, it could push the car from zero to 60 miles per hour in under 4 seconds, according to General Motors as well as reviewers. And the 2014 C7 Corvette provided better than 1 g in cornering grip. Among other things, the new engine featured direct injection, active fuel management and an advanced combustion system. Indeed, for so powerful and fast a car, it delivered surprisingly thrifty fuel consumption. EPA estimates for the 2014 C7 Corvette were 26 miles per gallon.
The LT1 engine had two choices of transmissions: a six-speed paddle shift or a Tremec TR 6070 seven-speed manual transmission with active rev management, a feature intended to make for smoother shifting.
Building on a new frame structure and chassis along with a new power train, the 2014 C7 Corvette also sported a new look outside and in. Outside, its low-drag, aerodynamic lines somehow looked more elegant and intimidating at the same time. The roof and hood were made of lightweight carbon fiber. One key change was in the tail lamps. These new, dual-element lamps looked different and featured efficient LED lighting for the white backup lights as well as for the red lights.
Inside, GM answered the prayers of some Corvette enthusiasts by offering a choice of two improved seats. One was a comfier, plusher seat for long-range cruises, while the other was a leaner, meaner competition-type seat.
The interior also received upgrades, with lots of choices for carbon fiber, aluminum and hand-wrapped leather. Dual 8 inch infotainment screens made it into the 2014 C7 Corvette, reflecting a growing trend for video on demand practically anywhere and anytime.
